Asthma, as with most chronic illnesses, is an inflammatory response in the lungs usually caused by some type of environmental or food allergy. Our typical course of action at Young Foundational Health Center is to do delayed allergy testing to try and identify what underlying causes are to blame.
Other serious lung conditions like C.O.P.D. or emphysema occur when lung tissue has been damaged and does not work anymore to exchange gas properly. In these cases, we treat the patient with Iodine. Iodine makes fibrous tissues in the lungs more efficient so the lungs can become more compliant and less stiff allowing the patient to take in more oxygen. We have found a lot of drugs, including inhalers, can work but after a while they tend to lose their effectiveness. Because of this, we also tend to utilize intravenous Magnesium and oral Magnesium to jump start the restoration process. We add Vitamin C both orally and intravenously which acts like a steroid without the harmful side effects. We have found great success with many of these patients in getting them off of oxygen for months at a time.
